Merrill Lynch has cut forecasts by 10-20% by the end of the year on major European indices, as a result of the recent downward revision of year-end target on S & P 500. The target at end-2002 DJ Eurostoxx 50 index was increased from 3400 to 2800 points, one on the FTSE 100 from 5,000 to 4,500 points, one on the Dax down from 4700 points to 3850 while the target on the CAC 40 decreased from 4200 to 3,500 points. These objectives are preserved according to Merrill Lynch, being based on an estimate of 2003 income in line with those of 1999. But this leaves room for significant downward revisions to earnings or economic growth during the second half.

Fireworks for Piazza Affari. Accomplice turnaround on Wall Street, the Mibtel closed with an increase of 3.06% while the Mib30 of 3.60%. Well also Numtel (+3%). In Milan, the spotlights were all for financial transactions with rises in all respect to General (not at all weighed the floods in Eastern Europe and Germany), Alliance, IntesaBci, Sanpaolo-Imi. Very well the field of asset and in particular Mediolanum and Fideuram on rumors of a possible increase in fundraising during the month of August. A very positive day for the securities of the Galaxy Bicocca, with the exception of Seat has had to deal with the “reduce” at Merrill Lynch. Reflectors also on STMicroelectronics, the best title among the blue chips, thanks to Dell’s quarterly positive but all’exploit Nokia.
